"A Different Day"

Dad had flowers when he picked him up from daycare. Usually Mommy picks him up, but if Dad did, he never brought flowers. They stopped at McDonald's and Dad ordered him a Happy Meal with Chicken McNuggets and honey sauce for dipping. Dad told him they were going to the hospital and Billy didn't know why but was afraid to ask because he thought he should. He just ate his Chicken McNuggets and looked at all the lights zoom by outside the car window. He was happy that Dad got him McDonalds.
When they got to the hospital, Dad took the flowers and gave them to him and told him to give these to your mother. They went inside the hospital and up the elevator to a small room with lots of people in it. Some were grown-ups and some were kids like him. All the grown-ups had regular clothes on, but the kids wore pajamas and some even slept in their parent's arms. Billy felt special because he was wearing regular clothes, like the grown-ups, and didn't even feel tired.
He felt even more special when Dad put a funny blue shirt and hat on him and told him to go see his Mommy. She was the only one in the whole room lying on a bed, and she had on the special blue clothes too. He gave her the flowers like Dad said, and when she said thank you, he noticed she was crying. He didn't know what was going on, and he was going to ask her if she was sick, but then he saw the bundle Mommy was holding and he looked closer and he saw a little pink face with closed eyes. Then Mommy said say hello to your new sister, Billy, and Dad picked up the bundle and showed him how to hold it and put it in his arms. And as he held it he felt silly for forgetting that today was the day his sister came and that was why Dad picked him up and had flowers and got him McDonald's. He looked around the room and everybody was looking back at him. Mommy was crying and so were some of the other mommies and all the dads were smiling and laughing and some people were taking pictures.
He looked around at all the other kids in their pajamas and he felt pretty special. He felt special because he was still wearing regular clothes. He felt special because he got McDonald's for dinner. He felt special because he got to wear the special blue shirt and hat. He felt special because he had a new baby sister. And when he looked down at her and saw how much smaller she was, he felt something else--something he'd never felt before. Billy felt just a little bit older than he used to be.
