dear derron:
most basically, dasein is "being in the world". if u have the most recent translation of "being and time" joan stambaugh points out heidegger's tendency to write it da-sein, which emphasizes its literal translation as "there-being". It encompes a being that is finite but that is held in an infinite position. It is a being that has relations, "other", and therefore it is "
there being". about etymology, i believe this to be the basis of phenomenology--the study of the "being of beings". It serves to get at the root of meanings and of "being". In the introduction to "being and time" this is described in the latter sections (5-7). Greek philosophy, namely that of Plato, is a metaphysical ontology, whereas Heidegger's is more centered on the being of this world. Plato saw this world as a mere imitation of the truth--which was "other worldly". Not unlike the 19th century philosopher G.W.F.Hegel-Plato's ontology was dialectic. Heidegger wanted to get away from this understanding of being 1) it paradigmatically describes the nothing as a negation of being, whereas Heidegger sees it as a separate entity (non-entity rather) and 2) because it disregards time and fails to set being within time (heidegger discusses this also in the intro to being and time). I am only an undergraduate in philosophy and I read Heidegger as a hobby because I find both his writing and thought to be inspiring and historically quite significant. I am not sure that I have helped you, I have done my best nonetheless. If you ever feeling like discussing Heidegger send me an e-mail!
