beowulf himself is an allusion to the new testament character Jesus. he goes through 3 battles, much like Jesus' temptations, he's born into humble cirstances and becomes the savior of his people, he chooses to die a pre-destined, horrible way, his name is revered by his followers, he came from a blessed womb, his followers betrayed him at his death... there are many more in there. the editor was obviously a christian monk, and the references to God were inserted by him. beowulf lived in a pagan society, and knew not of any saving god with plans of an afterlife. the only way for them to live after death was through their stories of their battles.
