one reason is that he did not go on a great voyage to find his true self. Most Epic heroes have to find and subdue their faults and Beowulf does not venture out to please the gods or in anyway conquer fears or the one personality trait that holds them from being a hero. Beowulf voyages to the other country to repay the debt his father has not repayed.

the next reason could be that his battles were out of loyalty and honor to his king not battles set forth by gods to prove worthilness.
