: : i'm writing a research paper on goov vs. evil in beowulf as it is presented through the digressions. who exactly were the bad kings? i'm having problems coming up with enough points to present on them.
: Ok, there are several points of good vs. evil in the poem, not only with kings, but with the symbols and what they represent.
: Light/Darkness represent good and evil,
: Society (the king and his kin) vs. Loneliness (grendel lives alone, cuz he's a murderer - evil)
: Land and Water (water is thought of as evil because it is cold, fierce, unknown and therefore it's feared of. Notice that grendel lives in a marsh or lake or something)
: Cain and Family (Kin is the most important thing to anglo-saxons, they value their family more than anything. Grendel murdered his brother which is the ultimate sin)
: and most important, struggle of Beowulf (noble, fair, strong, courageous - all good values) with Grendel (murderer, monster, lives alone in deep waters and comes out when its dark - all evvvvil)
: There you go, hope it helps you and others
