: Essay information on the main themes that appear in the Merchant of Venice.
to Mari Kelly: The main theme i like in this work, and which is my favourite quote perhaps in all of Shakespeare, comes from the duke of Aragon in act2 scene9...'What say's the golden chest? ha! let me see: 'Who chooses me shall gain what many men desire.' What many men desire! that 'many' may be meant by the fool multitude, that choose by show, not learning more than the fond eye doth teach; Which pries not to the interior, but, like the martlet(a stupid bird), builds in the weather on the outward wall (it's nest on the outside walls of buildings), even in the force and road of casualty...... a wonderful expose of the worlds stupidity, racism, ignorance and vanity don't you think?
