Are there any discussions here at all?
Anyway. I find Gertrude interesting. There is nothing that points to her first marriage being anything but happy.
She does however possess a remarkable ability to bury her head in the sand, and the reason she marries his brother, well, she is wooed by a strong man that will take care of her and in a way I don't think she wants to cope with reality;
She wishes Hamlet to be more cheerful, a rather be answer to his problems. Her reactions to Hamlet's attacks is not to look for the source of his troubles but to worry about the worries in themselves.
I see her as a rather pathetic person, letting herself be used by the people she trust (which is basically everyone).
Today she would be a suicidal trophy-wife doing drugs.
My opinion, and I may add that I haven't studied literature, so I may be way off compared to the accepted versions. mrg
