: : Anyone have any thoughts/relevant points to make on Sartre's notion of a person? Perhaps concerning his idea of consciousness - the distinction between 'pour-soi' and 'en-soi'- How this is connected to man's inherent freedom and Sartre's statement that 'existence precedes essence'.
: Only that existance precedes essence because of a persons inherant freedom; he defines his essence after he is born, he defines what he truely is whether he is concious of it or not. a tree, on the other hand, has no freedom, and it's essence preceeds it's existance.
