Hello everyone:
In pursuance of the subject on the mystery of mind, the question I would like to post for discussion is this.
Does one need a soul to have a mind, or is having a functioning body-brain already sufficient? If the former, (a) why is the soul not conscious when the body-brain is put under general anesthesia -- during a major operation for instance? If the latter, (b) how it is possible for a material thing such as a body-brain not only to become conscious, but also able to remember and think?
Please note that (a) is to offer religious dualists or soul-believers to have their say. On the other hand, (b) is to challenge the materialists to come up with some intelligible explanation.
If you find both questions to be difficult pushovers, you will appreciate the basic meaning of what is usually referred to in philosophy as the mystery of mind -- more popularly known as the mind-body problem.
As the asking of question such as these may be seen by some as making smoke over the prospect of a personal hereafter, I shall hope that what ensue in these forum would not be the raising heaven and hell, but cool, cogent, and clear arguments on rational ground instead.
Yours sincerely,
Peter M.K. Chan
