why try to make sense of it? it's a retarded little saying. But just to humor you..i will explain what they are trying to say.
Lets start with the pear aspect. If you have a pear sitting on the palm of your hand you cannot really say you are grasping it (in this context by grasp they mean to grip or to hold, not comprehend or understand). They intend to say that if you were grasping it, it would not be sitting on an open palm but enclosed by your fingers and palm. In otherwords, it can be both sitting freely AND held tight.
Ok, now to the "understaning with an open mind" part. They are trying to say that being open minded precludes understanding since in order to understand something they think it's necessary to close your mind and settle on one definition or paradigm. But here is their flaw, comprehension (understanding) and open-mindedness are not mutually exclusive. You can have both.
This type of gibberish falls under the realm of eastern philosophy. It tries to make everything sound so ennlightened with it's quirky little sayings. People think that if their audience cannot understand the funny little quotes then they are not enlightened enough to "get it". "Gee, that sounds complicated and confusing, therefore it must be intelligent and thought-provoking". Please, spare us the cryptic world of trash philosophy. If you want to say something then say it straight out without all the mystical crap.
So, does that make "sense" to you? Trust me, ignore drivel like this and pick up some Aristotle or Popper. Your brain will thank you for it.
