Ok, so, yes, the essense of what it is to be human is to think. Descartes in his "First Meditations on Philosophy," which I suggest you read, believed that the essense of the human mind was to think. "But what then am I? A thing that thinks. What is that? A thing that doubts, understands, affirms, denies, wills, refuses, and that also imagines and senses." Yet, the cogito argument gets us only to the belief that "I exist," and that is all. The fact is that, whether Descartes is a sleep or awake, he is thinking, and the action of thinking requires the existance of an actor. Therefore conversely Descartes is in existance because he was thinking. This is where, "I think therefore I am," comes from. Yet, it wasn't stated in that exact sentence structure so if you read for that phrase you might p up the argument.
