As far as I can see, there is only one instance where Lady Brett
shows any signs of mature behavior. That is when she gives up her
affair with Pedro Romero. Otherwise, and this is pretty much the
point of the story, she ends up at the end just the same as she was at
the beginning; back in Paris borrowing money from Jake. She is still
guilty of vanity, which is alluded to in the title which is taken from
Esslesiates in the Bible: "Vanity of vanity, saith the preacher. All
[things of man and women] is vanity." This means "in vain."

None of the characters matures, learns from their mistake or misfortunes,
and this is the tragedy of the novel.
