Abner Snopes, the father, burns the barn and ruins the rug. The protagonist is the son. He deals with whether to obey his father, who he knows is immoral, or go with what he knows is right and leave his family and his father. He realizes his father will never change so he runs away at the end while his father is burning another barn.
