: : by William Faulkner
: does anyone know details to this story?
yah, well basically what happens is that a kid (10 at first, later 16, i think) goes hunting once he turns 10. He goes annually in Nov. for two weeks on Major de Spain's hunting grounds. There's this "looming," and "tremendous" and "indomitable" etc. bear named Old Ben in the woods who has never been bayed by hunting dogs (they don't have the courage). Well, one day, they finally get a dog that'll bay him (named Lion) and they catch up to him. The dog attacks and a guy named Boon jumps in too. In the end, Lion, Old Ben, and a half black, half Indian guy Sam Fathers all die. Major de Spain never hunts again. The boy goes back one last time, but things have changed. Progress is coming, and its his last visit. The ending is really weird. Boon breaks up his gun and is banging its pieces together in front of a gum tree.
Anyhoo, if u want the story, try "Big Woods The Hunting Stories". It's the first story in there.
