elliot was hugely influenced by Conrad, the line in question... "Mista Kurz... He dead" is a cynical statement made by a black boy in the Congo Jungle.. Kurz was a God figure there.. torturing the locals and getting precious Ivory by "unsound methods" the Hollow man a poem about the collapse of the christo jewish culture which has held europe together for hundreds of years, the line represents the death of gods, there are no more false idols... we are hollow men , stuffed men, leaning together.. groping in the dark for a glimmer of light. erm..... other influences were Milton (Paradise lost) and Dante's inferno.. the divine comedy
