I have an ignment entitled"The Wasteland is a war poem". Discuss.
I have looked at binary opposites such as male/female, water/desert, proper/improper desire and the conflict that occurs within the work, plus the references and allusions to war itself such as ships at Mylae, rats alley, the deposed powers etc. Plus his working at the bank dealing with post war debt and the problems of Versailles amongst other themes.
However,I feel there are areas that merit looking at such as;
(1) Wasteland itself possibly being a huge anti war poem.
(2) The fact that Eliot's next major work `Ash Wednesday` was nearly 8 years later and a conservative symbolist work at that. Does this hint that he saw The Wasteland as his modernist poem to end all modernist poetry as the war was seen as the war to end all wars?
ANY HELP, VIEWS OR IDEAS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED AND CREDITED. THANKS FROM SUNNY ENGLAND. PAUL MURRAY.
