: It seems to me that TS Eliot is saying that love cannot be expressed amidst appearances. It is reminiscent of Krapp (in Beckett's Krapp's Last Tape) where he wants to see his lover's eyes and believe she is in love with him. : Of course, the end of the play shows a man in dispair--and though life is only good when one believes in love. : Eliot is not this deparate. The repetition of the line "That is not it at all,/That is not what I meant, at all." gives room for explanation. However, it seems that the Eliot means not to use contractions because the barrier of formality is still raised--making the speaker feel more isolated. Pretense exists even on this subtle level. : But while the speaker is seeking substance in love, thought the poem provides no answer, the speaker still, unlike Krapp, sees an answer possible. When will the women stop talking of Michalangelo and start talking to the speaker?
