: Does anyone know if Jack London wrote a short story titled A Piece of Steak, and where to find it?
Yes, Jack London wrote it and it's a great story. You can find it in many anthologies of Jack London's short stories, such as "The Portable Jack London" and the Library of America's "Jack London: Novels and Short Stories." It was originally published in a collection called "When God Laughs" and you can find this complete book online at Project Gutenberg, http://www.promo.net/pg and also at http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/london/writings.
Jack London was a serious boxer and a boxing devotee. "A Piece of Steak" is about an aging boxer, trying hard to make a living through prize-fighting and gradually failing. He is desperate for the thirty pounds he will earn if he wins a boxing match against a noted fighter, Sandel. He goes into the fight not quite properly trained and not quite properly nourished. If only he had been able to afford a piece of steak! Hence the title...
Another fine boxing story by Jack London is "The Mexican."
