I believe Orwell also wrote 1984 as a fable detailing the corruptibility of human nature. Anyone who has read the book knows that Winston Smith, through his conditioning under the Party, has come to long for corruption in any and all forms. The character Julia, however, whom Winston falls in love with, is at first portrayed as a believer in all Party policies, 'goodthinkful', as the Newspeak word would put it. But once Winston comes in contact with her out of sight of the Party, he discovers that she is actually a lawbreaker, criminal, decepteur, and quite possibly a nymphomanic. This is shocking both to Winston and the reader, but as he becomes more closely intwined in their affair, it becomes obvious that Julia ISN'T corrupt at all in comparison to the totalitarian state of Oceania. I believe Orwell's point may have been, 'you are only as corrupt as you have been conditioned to be,' or 'all criminal activity, is only criminal if you believe it is.' Another good moral is Julia's observation, "If you keep the small rules, you can break the big ones."
