To Young Girls and Women across North America,
In the drawer of the night table beside my bed, I still have a letter
my mom wrote to me one evening. Every so often, I read it. And
sometimes, I write back to her. She can't read the letters I write
her though, because a few years ago, she died. Even if she was still
here with me, though, I don't know if I'd give her the letters. And I
doubt I'd ever be able to tell her in words all the things I write on
paper. I'd be afraid she'd get upset, or be disappointed in me.
A little while ago, all this made me wonder, was I the only girl who
had things to say to her mom, but couldn't find the words? I couldn't
possibly be. There had to be other girls out there like me. Or girls
completely different from me. Do you have a letter in your night
table? Or maybe just in your heart? Here's your chance to write it
down.
"Dear Mom: Letters to our Mothers about the things we couldn't say"
will be a book of letters from girls, aged 9 to 25, across Canada and
the USA
to their mothers -- living or not. I will give proceeds from the sales
of the book to cancer research, because if there had been a cure for
cancer, maybe my mom would still be alive and with me today. But
first, I need your help.
If you'd like the chance to write your mom a letter telling her
everything you can't say to her in person, here is your chance. The
topics are endless:
- Is your mom your role model and you want to tell her why? -Were you
adopted and want to write to write to your birth mother, or do you
want to let the mom that adopted you know that you consider her to be
your real mom?
- Are you upset that your mom smokes, drinks or uses drugs?
- Do you have a secret -- maybe you were d, had an abortion, have
depression, an eating disorder, are a , feel like a failure,
feel the pressure to succeed, feel neglected, want to leave home,
want to move back home?
- Or like me, did your mom die before you got the chance to tell her
everything you wanted to say?
Letters that are honest and specific have the best chance of being
published. Include your age, race, nationality, religion, in what
part of North America you live and/or any details of your life that will
make your letter more meaningful. If your letter is selected, you can
request only your first name be used, for your privacy. If you have
something to say, type your letter today and send it, along
with your name (for verification), age, address, phone number
and/or email address, to:
email: enchanted@canada.com
Your letter will remain in total confidentiality, read only by me,
until you are notified whether or not it will be included in the
book. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and please
send it to any girls you think would like to be a part of this
project.
