Hi. I'm new to this board. I'm just stopping by to give my opinion of Aristophanes. I've read most of his plays and just want to say I think he's very good. He's cheerfully vulgar, imaginative and very very funny. Despite all the topical references in his plays, they do still mannage, more than 2000 years later, to make people laugh. I suppose it's a little too sophisticated kind of humor for some people's taste, but I get a real kick out of him. The fact that many of his plays are lost, though unfortunate, just kind of adds to his legend and the mystery of his writings in that ancient era. I wonder what his lost plays are like..but if we really KNEW, and ALL of his plays survived, what fun would that be? There would be no reason to continue reading about him and doing research about him. If all his plays were extant, we'd just read them a couple times and then take them for granted. Anyway, I've only been aware of Aristophanes for two months, but I think he's inarguably one of the greatest and most influential satirists of all time!
