Legend has it that Stupach wanted to present it as his own. Stuppach had a habit of commissioning music anonymously and having his guests guess who composed it. Mozart did not work with his student Sussmeyer, who completed the Requiem along with three other composers whom Constanze hired to do the task. She then sold it to Stuppach, who did indeed perform it as his own work. Mozart was commissioned for the Requiem in 1791, not 1771. He died on December 7, 1791, one month short of his 36th birthday. Mr. Smith's story is certainly more romantic than the true story, but as far as fact goes, Mr. Smith, please be sure before you mislead someone else.
