This proposition was posited by Eric Sams in his article for Musical Times a number of years ago. It is interesting that these views have never been taken up seriously and that the pulley system, not a chiroplast, was the offending machine. The chiroplast, invented by Logier was said to have been used by Clara Wieck for a short period.

Although the chiroplast was never established as a really useful machine for pianists, the Kalkbrenner rail had much more going for it - very good for developing 8ves!

It is nice to see that Schumann is a subject for discussion on your site. My Masters research area was on Clara Schumann's teaching and pupils, with a view to learning more about Schumann interpretation, it was a really worthwhile exercise and shows up how far todays so-called Schumann specialists are from an appropriate performing style
