I suppose my remarks were a bit presumptuous. But the question of compion in Parsifal is apparently an open one. I just finished reading Robert W. Gutman's "Richard Wagner: The Man, His Mind, and His Music" (New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1968). Gutman makes a convincing case that whatever compion is there should be restricted to the Teutonic races; witness Kundry's permanent servanthood in the last act. The book soundly condemns Wagner's character while still admitting the glory of his music. I thought, however, that the author was a little too hard on his libretti: I've heard a professor of German praise Wagner's poetry.
All that really becomes clear is that Wagner was a strange and contradictory character.
