Cambridge Arts Theatre is to host a major arts event this summer never before seen in Cambridge. For the first time, and in its entirety, the Arts Theatre will be presenting Longborough Festival Opera’s acclaimed production of Wagner’s RING CYCLE, from 8-14 July 2002. Acclaimed as the greatest achievement in the history of western culture, Wagner’s RING is huge in scale and unmatched in its ambition and wide-ranging themes.
‘Anthony Negus’s considerate and experienced conducting not only impressed itself on the stage action but drew the best from the versatile orchestra’
Sunday Telegraph
Ian Ross, Executive Director of Cambridge Arts Theatre said: ‘I am absolutely thrilled that the Arts Theatre will be the venue for an arts event as unique and large-scale as The Ring. I am delighted that we will be bringing the whole of the Ring Cycle to Cambridge; it is a very prestigious and exciting project for us’.

Longborough’s RING is the acclaimed shortened version prepared for Birmingham City Opera by Jonathan Dove and Graham Vick. Performed in German, THE RING contains some of the most influential and powerful scenes in opera. The series of operas encompes both ideas of greek mythology, with emphasis on myth and communal experience, and the political fervour of Wagner’s time; THE RING has had a major impact on music, art and literature since its creation. The four operas, Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung, are directed by Alan Privett and conducted by Anthony Negus, and have received a rapturous and celebratory reception from critics. The auditorium of Cambridge Arts Theatre will present a uniquely intimate opportunity to experience this once-in-a-lifetime dramatic, visual and musical spectacle.
‘Das Rheingold…a remarkable success…Nicholas Polwell was a memorably
daunting Alberich’
