Does anyone out there have definitive evidence that baroque violinists did INDEED use the curved bow since this would explain the musical impossiblities to playing Bach's Violin Sonatas and Partitas. I would love to be able to cite a written eye-witness account of the use of the bow in Bach's time, and hopefully (am I dreaming) in context of the playing of the Sonatas and Partitas.

Furthermore, as I practice these pieces, I am discovering that the works emphasize proactive use of the fourth finger to be ready at all times, to anticipate the next chord. Also I suspect that Bach probably would have insisted that not only should the fingers be kept down, but the fingers should be kept down on two strings at the same time(fifths). Does this make sense?

thanks
