Butler Pennsylvania 46
One evening
a nine-year-old girl
walked across the stage
at our High School
to a Steinway concert grand
where she sat
with dangling feet
and played
an Allemande
of Johann Sebastian Bach
in such a way
that every one of us there
leapt to their feet
and clapped,
almost before
she had finished.
She came
to the edge
and curtsied,
but we went on
applauding
till she returned,
seven times in all,
sobbing.
