There have been several opinions expressed here (including mine) on which are Rameau's best operas. At the moment, after listening to the recording multiple times and actually seeing a performance here in Washington, I'm inclinded to think that Dard is right up there and may be the strongest musically of all. In the staging at Wolf Trap, the Antenor (unlike Naouri's performance on the Christie recording) was an extremely sympathetic character. He turned out to be the main dramatic interest of the piece: this is a guy who did everything he could but still lost everything. So, to my own surprise, I now find Dard dramatically, as well as musically, compelling.
