First of all, each of Mahler's compositions are very unique to themselves. They are Mahler, for heaven's sake. A friend of mine said that each symphony is an entirely a different world, and this is very, very true. Perhaps what distinguishes the third from his other symphonies is the fact that the third is much longer than his other symphonies - around 2 hours or so. Mahler wrote the third about the nature that he loved. He composed this symphony while staying at his summer home at Steinbach am Attersee - east of Salzburg. This place provided Mahler with untold inspiration, especially from the "Hollengebirge". These were the great mountains he told Walter that he had already "composed away". Mahler also finished his second symphony here. There is much more to be said and heard from the third symphony. The symphony goes from "What the flowers tell me" to "What the animals in the forest tell me" to the last indescribable adagio of "What love tells me". Listen.
