I saw this marveous Ronald Harwood play when my wife and I were in London last September. It was in previews when we saw it, but we were dazzled by the writing and acting. It seems to me that Mr. Harwood captured the Alma-Gustav conflict perfectly, didn't try to do too much with the material, and provided a poignant and perceptive picture of these two pained and searching souls. Antony Sher had Mahler down beautifully in his acting -- even the awkward skip in his walking and the neurotic pacing and nervousness was all there. The supporting cast was likewise superb! I know this play will not become a popular hit with the mes, but for a Mahlerite it is an fascinating piece of work, so long as the director has the actors to play Alma and Gustav on the stage. This is a very special play in my opinion.
