If you haven't already received some recommendations for Mahler Symphony recordings, and are interested in the less-expensive sets, I can recommend the Solti/Chicago Symphony Orchestra set on Decca/London. The cheapest set still in the process of being completed will be the Naxos set. Most sets don't include two works essential for the appreciation of his symphonies: the song-symphony Das Lied von der Erde written after the 8th Symphony to be the fateful "Number Nine," so that the so-called 9th Symphony was really "No. 10," and the "real Number Ten" which he left unscored and has been completed by various individuals, expecially the late Deryck Cooke, who made two versions of his completion. The Solti/CSO/Decca-London set is midpriced, as is another very good one, the Tennstedt/London Symphony Orchestra on EMI. I have both of those as well as the Haitink/Concertgebouw Orchestra set on Philips and the second Bernstein set with the Concertgebouw and Vienna Philharmonic on Deutsche Grammaphon. You may certainly end up preferring individual recordings of the various symphonies, but the complete sets are very convenient. Good luck! --Warren Malach/Brucknerfan@aol.com
