Hi Mahler buffs. This is an e-mail that I sent to certain group of chummy Mahlerites that I know. I thought I'd share this with you. I've always been very frustrated with the sound on the Unicorn issue of Horenstein's M3, and have greatly prefered the old Nonesuch LP pressings of it.

"I found the Brilliant Clics Mahler box set, used, for a very cheap price. I remember Tony Dugan claiming that the Horenstein M3 in that box
comes from a different microphone source than the Unicorn CD issues do, and that it generally sounds better. Indeed, this sounds more like what
I remember the old Nonesuch LP pressing to sound like. The sound is a tad aggressive and close up, but I prefer it to the more pale yet dried-out sound that Unicorn came up with. I keep my Mahler recordings stored in chronological order of their release date, and I find it
interesting that I own about 15 recordings of the 3rd that came out AFTER the Horenstein. To my ears, it still sounds a bit dated, even with
this different sounding pressing. Still, it was certainly one of the better M3's for its time. In agreeance with John Kim, I too think that the '66 Haitink/Concertgebouw M3 was excellent for its time. As for the rest of the Brilliant Clics box, I don't intend to keep any of it. I
already own the Jarvi/Gothenburg M8, which is surprisingly good albeit fast. The rest of them are all decent, but I already own many other
better recordings of each of these works, including later ones by Vaclav Neumann for the two symphonies that he's included in on: M5 and M9".
