Although I agree that Gabrielli was a better composer than
Palestrina (making me a heretic amoung music historians)
he does not compare to Bach. For one thing, there are
a few works of his where he makes mistakes in his
contrapuntal writing. Whereas Bach never made any
mistakes (or none that I am aware of). In my mind,
technical skill such as that is one of the necessary
marks of a great composer. Which is why I don't think
that Tchaikovski was a great composer (since he was
terrible at form)
