I think the best source for the Doria Manfredi affair is the invaluable biography by Mosco Carner. It is a very thorough and critical work. Carnet devotes a brief chapter to this affair, called "Tragic Interlude". It is fully doented, including fragments of Puccini's and Elvira's letters.
You will also want to look into the story behind Suor Angelica, and the person of the evil aunt, and her relation to her niece.
