Handel definetely knew Purcell's music quite well as it was played quite often through the first half of the 18th century in England. Handel's great predecessor greatly influenced him, particularly in choral works such as Messiah. He also said about his music once: "If Purcell had lived, he would have composed better music than this". My question is, which Purcell works in particular achieved widespread popularity in 18th century England and therefore were ones that Handel was familiar with? Please answer soon, i need this for a report soon. Maybe Te Deum and Jubilate? The Queen? Ode for St Cecilia's Day? The more detail and doentary evidence, the better.
