which is your favorite recorded performance, why?
so far ive been moved most by richter's live one on bbc legends with kondrashin. it seemed tame upon the first few listenings, but what is happening seems now to me far beneath the surface. it has a dynamic between orchestra and piano that few other versions have afforded me in terms of rewards for scrutinous listening. this seems to be a recurring phenomenon in liszt for me, i think it explains the reticient attitude towards old franz. the accusations of shallow virtuosity may be a result of the depth of investigation.
ive been consiering getting the ogdon version, also on bbc legends, and am on the fence with either that of janis/kondrashin in moscow. any opinions?
