Chopin's music was far superior to Liszt's - his music was much more rich and complex harmonically - it had strong melodies and form - and most importantly, it stood for something (the nationalistic spirit of Poland which was under attack from the Russians) whereas the music of Liszt was an extension of his own flamboyant, show-off personality. Liszt saw himself as bigger than the music and his performances were to glorify himself and to attract the women. He and Wagner (his father-in-law) were leaders in the breakdown of traditional tonality and opened the door for Schoenberg's complete disregard for it.
