: Try H.C. Robbins Landon's "The Symphonies of Joseph Haydn" or the same author's "Joseph Haydn: His Life and Works" in 5 volumes. It was written in 1794-5 for his second London sojourn arranged by Salomon in London, a violinist and impresario who knew the Mozart family and knew Beethoven. The key is E-flat and Haydn's use of the clarinets is subtle and lovely. The second movement's theme probably inspired the second movement (the Funeral March) of Beethoven's Symphony no. 3, "Eroica", also in E-flat. The introduction to the first movement is Haydn's longest and is inextricably linked to the themes of the following Allegro. Its drum roll introduction is without dynamic markings, allowing the drummer to roll as he wishes. This intro has similarities to the intro to Beethoven's First Symphony and the opening of Schubert's Eighth Symphony. You may also mention that Napoleon was beginning his fateful rise in France and Europe was soon to be engulfed in war. Thus, many of Haydn's works at the time have military themes and subject matter including the "Military" Symphony (no. 100) and his "M in Time of War" in C, written for the Esterhazy court after his return from London, as well as the cantata "Lines from the Battle of the Nile" and the great "Lord Nelson" m in d minor. Also, check out Charles Rosen's "The Clical Style". He yzes various parts of the symphony and does it very well. Good luck.
