An important early work by Edward Elgar, unjustly neglected for years, is finally to be given a performance by dynamic young musicians in Cambridge.
I believe…in Beethoven
Composed in 1874 when Elgar was just sixteen, "Credo" is a setting of the Latin Creed – but all the music is taken directly from Beethoven symphonies! Drawing from parts of no. 5, 7 and 9, the young Elgar built an entirely original structure using techniques which prefigure many of his later, greater works.
… in borrowing
Elgar’s works are saturated with references to Beethoven, most famously in his homage to Beethovenian slow movements in Nimrod – indeed, the quotation of the Adagio from the Ninth Symphony in Credo almost sounds like a reference to late Elgar by his younger self!
…in King’s College, Cambridge
This performance is being mounted by the student-run King’s College Musical Society on 24 February 2002 in the chapel, and will be given by King’s Voices – the exciting new mixed-voice choir of the college. The concert will also feature Berio’s extraordinary Rendering of the sketches for Schubert’s tenth symphony, as well as Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 and Handel’s "Zadok the Priest".
