I have almost forgotten this beautiful charming sonata. So I decided to put it back on my répertoire(I have played it before and who knows why, I abandoned it, what a crime!). One who studies this sonata with not much of attention would say: "oh, a joyful sonata like a study(étude)for down-going arpeggios". Is that all? NO!!! Yes, that's right, EVERYTHING goes down(like in K. 502)! Arpeggios accompained with jump-dancing syncopations and powerful chords! And I mean powerful(check out bars 60-64)! But let's talk about minor pages(my favorite ones): bars 64-69(the most beautiful spot for me)! Than, the pages with the beautiful ostinato in the left hand bars 24-25, 69-74 and especially 75-78! Than, those down-going sequences bars 26-31(2nd half 79-84)with the two-voice left hand in syncopations with the right hand whose syncopations make, with the left hand, the hidden parallèle fifths!!!and it sounds wonderful! And Scarlatti terminates those sequences with a beautiful "cadence frigienne" bars 29-31(2nd half 82-84)! I find the same proceeding in K. 539 bars 38-42(2nd half 101-105)with the same "cadence frigienne"(beautiful!!!)and of course, in K. 552 bars 25-28(2nd half 57-60)-unfortunately no "cf" in those pages but they are already SO beautiful! However, I found one hidden "cf" in K. 552 bars 40-43!!! Wonderful!!! So, back to K. 223! I simply adore when Scarlatti uses the sequences like this! Oh, yes, I found another "cf" in K. 223 bars 57-60! Neat, isn't it? And how about this extraordinary modulation bars 50-55? Brave, isn't it? Anybody feels like me about K. 223?
Marko
P.S. Sorry, Arnold, I have no story for K. 223, not yet :-)
