I picked up the Naxos Musical Journey DVD of Bruckner's Romantic Symphony with scenes of Austria today and came away with a mixed review of it. I like the concept, and would like to see more of the series, although I am not sure from the prospectus for it which came with this copy that the installments featuring the music of other composers in the series consist of complete works like this one or only of exerpts. One of the biggest problems that I had with the photography was that the "tempo" of the scenes did not always match the "tempo" of the music, i.e., I expected faster cutting between scenes during faster, busier portions of the music, and saving the longer, more static scenes for the slower music. While I noticed that the filming of a castle for the first movement went with the ideas Bruckner himself expressed when asked for his "program" for this Symphony, I enjoyed the scenes of St. Florian used with the second movement much more. As far as the performance of the music itself goes, I was surprised that Naxos didn't use the later recording with Georg Tintner, but I found the Neuhold/Flanders Philharmonic performance at least adequate. --Warren Malach
