"Which Wand/NDR #8 do you have--the first one recorded in Luebeck Cathedral with the cathedral on the cover, or the second, with Wand on the
cover?"
---------
The latter, with Wand's picture - divided into 2 disc set for $60 (+ 15% taxes, of course) = almost $70 for Bruckner's 8! (to your knowledge, is that the commanding price elsewhere?) Of couse there's no price one can put on such glorious music, but, like everything else in this world, it's all relational. Karajan's 8th with VPO - DG 1988 at full price is $44. Giulini 8th with the same orchestra (2cd's on DG MASTERS) is $18. Karajan's 1958 EMI 2 disc set of Bruckner's 8th with Glorious Wagner fill-ups (Lohengrin and Parsifal each of parts I and III) cost me only $7.
Wand's older Bruckner box set is available here (i've seen it for around $160 - if memory serves. But that was before his ping).
----------
"the first [Wand's] recordings of #8 & 9 are considered better than the later ones."
----------
Indeed, i recall the mentioning of such reference too... some time ago... Thanks for the remider.
