Indeed - which emphasizes my point. At least we're consistent - each from our own point of view that is, with mutual agreement of his 3rd, 4th and 6th (the 5th as well... now that i've just listened to it again, but not his later symphonies 7,8 and 9). Don't get me wrong - it's only a point of view that a conductor makes some listeners "resonate" to his interpretative qualities or style - branding it a fascinating art of its own!
i've recently seen Wands' 3rd (NDR re-issue) for $50!! - talk about exploitation. Shame on RCA! Even his last recording - Bruckner's 4th with Scubert's 9th, each on seperate CD, but sold together as one package for $50. Once again, RCA is taking full advantage. Since I already possess Wand's 4th (recorded not too long ago with the BPO in 1998 his 7th and 9th of the same cycle) and Scubert's 9th (not with Wand), there's no compelling reason for spending $50 acquiring both CD's since i don't listen much to Scubert's last symphony, "the great" (not because i dislike it). However, I'd consider buying Wand's Brucker 4th CD alone for curiosty to see his evolution of interpretation of this wonderful Romantic symphony once again. A big mistake on RCA's part i think.
John, did you also know that Giuseppe Sinopoli died last year of mive heart failure - collapsed while rehearsing (if memory serves) Richard stauss' opera Ariadne auf Naxos? He was quite young - early 50's! His Bruckner 5th (Nowak edition), recorded live on DG in 2001 is very well interpreted and played by Staatsapelle Dresden orchestra. Too bad - as i liked his interpretive Bruckner style (and Schubert too) and would've been interesting to hear more of his Bruckner.
Regards,
Ara
