Warren, thanks for advice on Giulini's Bruckner 7th. Will acquire it shortly. Too bad Celibidache started his cycle from the 3rd symphony (my favorite 3rd (on EMI) by the way - i do not know the DG version), Celi's 4th (EMI), especially the 4th movement is in a cl of its own, in a different dimension - if you will... really hard to put into words. His 6th (also on EMI) rather on the edge of being too slow - but not falling off a cliff, is excellent as well (Chailly's 6th with concertgebouw on London (1999) is my favorite - yes, even better than Klemperor's famous 6th). Celi's 5th, 7th, 8th, and 9th (unfortunately) are too slow for my tastes. Perhaps i need to listen and re-evaluate once again. But his 3rd, 4th and 6th (all on EMI) are memorable. I wonder if his DG recodings are artistically different. By the way, i acquired all of Stanislaw Skrowaczewki with the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestr Bruckner recordings and most are quite impressive - including recording (not to mention the bargain price - 3 CD for $20 Canadian!). Got hold of Bruckner's 9th (coupled with G.F.HÄNDEL Concerto grosso in D major op6 no. 10) with Rafael Kubelik on Orfeo label (symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Runfunks 6/85 digitally remastered) as i was curious regarding his interpretation of Bruckner's heroic masterpiece. It is iteresting in terms of revealing some texture of the symphony and is generally good - a bit on the faster tempo for some tastes. But does not move me as much as Karajan's magisterial (late 70's on DG) or Giulini's (1990 on DG).
The musical world recently lost the much beloved conductor, Günter Wand, in Feb. of this year. He was 90. Like Karajan, his last recording was Bruckner, but it was the Romantic symphony. I'm waiting for the release of his latest 8th symphony.
