Ara is quite right in commending this recording to Brucknerians! I got a copy from Japan, after many searches, only to have the Testament label recording come out in North America soon after!
I think Giulini is one of the most underestimated Bruckner conductors and also wish that he had done more Bruckner recordings. I can recommend the DGG Seventh without qualification, and I also want to make a plug for the recording he did of the Ninth with the Chicago Symphony, even if it isn't as good as the DGG one he did later. Tempos are very important to me in Bruckner (I am a Celibidache fan!) and Giulini doesn't rush Bruckner's music. We are fortunate indeed to have Maestro Giulini's performances of the Last Three Symphonies on disc! Speaking of the Second Symphony, it has always been one of my favorites, even more than the Third (sorry if I offend anyone with that judgement!) I remain perplexed at the way some conductors think Bruckner Symphonies start with the Third and don't perform/record the earlier ones, such as the late Maestro Wand, who recorded the later Symphonies several times, but a complete cycle with the Second only once! --Warren Malach/Brucknerfan@aol.com
