There are two essential Furtwangler Bruckner recordings you MUST have, above all others. The first is the previously mentioned 4/14/49 recording of the 8th, which is about as great as this great symphony gets. Furtwangler carresses the piece like no other.
The second is even more extraordinary, perhaps the most extraordinary Bruckner 9 recording ever made. It was made in October 1944. It was supposed to be a live performance recording, only...the audience never showed up! The impending doom of Germany kept Berliners away from the concert. Still, Furtwangler commanded the BPO to play, and play the did. The result is the most hair-raising Bruckner 9 imaginable. The devastating emotional impact from this recording is truly amazing. Throughout it, you can just hear Furtwangler's heart breaking over what has happened to his country.
