For the Fourth and Ninth symphonies, there's no one who can touch the Bruno Walter recordings; I grew up with them and (for those two works) are the greatest. Even my girlfriend likes them better than my other 8 or 10 performances of the Fourth!

: I agree with John here as well - one never feels that Celibidache's tempos are too slow. You actually feel the majesty of Bruckner's vision within your soul.

: After hearing one of the Gunter Wand recordings of the Eighth and comparing it to Celibidache, I can see why Celi called some Bruckner conductors "camel drivers." And although I have yet to hear the DGG cycle, I feel that the EMI set is the best one committed overall. A shame he did not do the first or second symphonies, not to mention Die Nullte! I don't think he would have bothered with the F minor "Study" symphony. Very few conductors do, although it is worth doing.
