IMO, you will not regret Sir Simon Rattle's M3 with the City of Birmingham SO [EMI]. It is excellent is every respect - interpretation, playing and demostration-like quality sound (recording). The langsam finale is visionary, magnetic, rich, well paced (not fast) and deeply moving without sentimentalities. What glorious music this is! I like his Mahler interpretations of #2, #3 and #10 (both 1980 and 2000) his 2nd 10th brings out the work's deeper qualities with intensity... backed up with the glorious BPO. Cant wait to hear his M 5th with the BPO soon to be released. Haitink with BPO on Philips is also great with a slow finale (i heard this disc at a music store while i was browsing - stayed entire length of this long finale. i liked what i heard!)
