There is something about a Furtwaengler peformance/interpretation that, despite pre-HiFi sound, transfigures the work under his baton into something extraordinary. One can hear the inspiration, the complete immersion in the music which was F's practice. He re-created the work, fully at the disposal of the composer.

But there are so many dubious releases of his legacy, badly engineered, transcribed at the wrong pitch, etc etc, that I just am unsure where to go for the better recordings. That is why I bring it up again after some previous discussion. I have found a Ninth with the Berlin on the Allegro label, and it sounds glorious. I have ordered the Testament label Eighth today, based on your recommendation and snippets available at CDNow.

Anyone here who has NOT heard Furtwaengler's Schubert Ninth on DGG (DG 47439, 1951 studio recording), newly remastered, you are denying yourself a glimpse into the divine light! Schubert was deeper than given credit for!
