Bruckner's or Mahler's Adagios? That's like trying to choose between a Steinway and a Boesendorfer! Because with Mahler's oeuvre you have to include moments such as the choral entry in the Second Symphony or the opening to the latter movement of the Eighth, and also the heart-wrenching final song of Das Lied von der Erde.
Fortunately, there are many great Adagio composers out there. In fact, most of the great composers wrote at least a few magnificent Adagios; Tchaikovsky's Pathetique Symphony finale comes to mind, as does Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and Hammerklavier Sonata. And as I mentioned in a previous post, Gorecki seems to be the contemporary Adagio master.
To write (or play) fast music demands only technique; to write or play slow music demands heart and soul. (That's an oversimplification, but how many musicians have you heard that play brilliantly in fast tempi but lack the heart to do an Adagio?)
